At One Thread Fair Trade, we are doing our best to minimize the effect we have on our environment.

Our products are made using hand loom silks. Hand loom weaving is tremendously better for the environment as the weaving is done by human hands and does not involve any machinery. As a result, hand loom fabrics produce ZERO energy impact and release 1 TON LESS CO2 in a year than the same job produced on a power loom. Power loom fabrics contribute large amounts of carbon emissions into our environment and one job on a power loom sucks up as much energy as 20 vacuum cleaners running all day.

Also, by using hand loom we support the rural hand loom weaving villages which are struggling to survive due to the increasing usage of power looms. Hand loom weaving uses nine times more labor than required by a power loom, thus providing many more people with a livelihood and means of survival.

Mayura Kona: Designer and Founder

Mayura wanted to use her education, privilege, and design talents to do something good for humanity, to improve the world in which we all live in. From this desire, One Thread Fair Trade was created. She works directly with the artisans not only to produce beautiful products but also to improve the confidence and self-worth of the women involved. She says she will never forget the day when she paid the women their first round of fair wages. “I walked into the workroom and was met with eyes overflowing with tears and hearts brimming with hope. My life was forever changed.” Her deep passion and commitment to women’s empowerment is the soul of the organization.

As a designer, she is inspired by patterns, whether it is the arrangement of roof tiles on a house or the veins of a maple leaf.  She believes that great design must start with a pencil and paper. “There is an intangible quality that you achieve when you begin the design process with your own hand drawings, without any use of technology.”

Mayura believes the path to true happiness lies in bringing joy to the lives and hearts of others.

She holds a BA in Design/Media Arts from UCLA and an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Luxurious Leather:

 

For a rugged, durable, hearty yet sexy style we’ve paired up a faux leather loveseat in chocolate with a white canvas armchair. 

When decorating in leather, there are some basic things to keep in mind.  If you’re going for a strong masculine appeal, then all leather looking décor may be just the thing for you.  The caveat with an all leather look is that it can be a bit harsh especially for a family or living room.   But it can really hit the spot in a den or office setting where work is the order of the day

 

Time-Honored Traditional:

 

For our traditional look, we used chenille slipcovers in cordovan and latte to give a sense of warmth and comfort.  In going for a traditional look, curved lines, soft edges, flowing images and warm textures mixed in with some vertical and horizontal lines and muted or earthy colors conjure up memories of warm fireplaces and cups of tea or hot cocoa.

Cutting Edge Contemporary:

 

For our contemporary look, use of whites and blacks and a grey rug give a stark contrast while still having a clean look.   Here we used our white canvas slipcovers and cushion covers paired with black 18” accent pillows for mod appeal.

Fire and Light Now Available at Christmas in Maxewll - Recycled Glass

Fire & Light hand-poured colored glass tableware has a way of drawing the eye, enchanting the viewer with the unique play of light that filters through its rich spectrum of colors and textures. This enchantment is not simply a quality of the glass or its pigmentation, but of the very way in which it is made, the very hands that pour and press it, the beliefs and spirit that drive the people who craft the product, and the community from which it originates.

Fire & Light Originals has a noteworthy heritage, formed in 1995 as a partnership between the Arcata Community Recycling Center in Humboldt County, California, and a group of local investors who wanted to develop an innovative plan for using crushed, recycled glass. Our founders decided to turn their recycled glass into a raw material, manufacturing distinctive products for sale in and out of the immediate area. After careful consideration, the group decided upon a distinctive line of colored glass dinnerware which would be created by melting crushed glass in furnaces, adding pigment, and pressing the molten glass into bowls, plates, and glasses. In December, 1995, the first glass products were poured and pressed from the Fire & Light furnaces, and the world became a bit more luminous, slightly more colorful.

John and Natali McClurg purchased the company in 1999. Together with a team of 20 people, Fire & Light Originals is handcrafting the beautiful giftware and colored glass dinnerware that is now shipped to specialty stores and galleries throughout the country. The enlightened practices that gave rise to the company continue to inform everything we do. Fire & Light still strives to find new ways to incorporate recycling into our production process, like using recycled beer kegs from local microbreweries as vats to cool our ladles.

Fire & Light colored glassware is a product whose history is a kind of future, where age-old craftsmanship meets innovative manufacturing, utilizing post consumer glass as a resource. But it's the beauty that will get you, the twinkle of light on the surface of a watery blue bowl, and the knowledge that we get as much happiness out of making the colored glass bowl as you will from having it on your table.

Las Vegas World Market

We are off to market this morning, starting at Building C, then A & B.  The market will soon grow to  12 millions square feet of marketing exhibit space.  Yesterday we visited Lion Ribbon, Raz, Ghilighting, Lin's, Midwest, and more.

Lion Ribbon had some of the most beautiful ribbons and trims for the all holidays, I will post more photos this week.
